Must I Do What God Says?
It is true that every person needs to hear God’s word. Hearing God’s word will produce faith. “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (Romans 10:17) Jesus told the 7 churches of Asia, “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” (Revelation 2:7, 11, 17, 29; 3:6, 13, 22). Once I hear, is it necessary that I obey? Must I do the commands of the word of God? What does the Bible say?
- If you hear only, and do not do, you are deceiving yourself. “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” (James 1:22)
- God’s word shows us what we ought to be doing. “For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; 24 for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.” (James 1:23-24)
- God blesses those who do and are not forgetful hearers. “But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.” (James 1:25)
Let’s study together so we can all hear what God’s word says and then do the commands given to us by God.
